Timber Plantations and Logging in Chile: Conflicts Over Mapuche Ancestral Lands Intensify

"Under the so-called “Green Economy,” corporations plan to green up their image by switching their manufacture of fuels and other products from fossil fuels to cellulose derived from tree plantations, including (in the future) genetically engineered tree plantations. Exotic eucalyptus trees are a favorite for tree plantations. Eucalyptus trees are very greedy for water and can exacerbate droughts. They are also extremely flammable and have caused tremendous wildfires. As we see from the article below, the increased pressure on land caused by these expanding tree plantations is leading to tremendous conflicts with forest dependent communities and Indigenous Peoples. All of these are yet more reasons why the “Green Economy” is no more than the old “Greed Economy” dressed up in a green costume."
